Habitat: Clump of shrubs 3m tall, with much die-back of branches every year; pith white. Leaflets with edges curled upwards, impossible to press them all flat.
Plant Morphology Observations: A few inflorescences still in bloom, about half with green fruit and the other half with ripe fruit. Inflorescence branches red-purple. Fruit dark purple, almost black, shiny, with dark red-purple juice, the juice turning blue in (calcareous) tap water, reddish in vinegar, blue in ammonia. Fruit edible, but somewhat bitter when eaten.
Local Abundance Observations: Unshaded brushy fencerow with Zanthoxylum americanum, Carya ovata, dead Ulmus americana, Urtica diocia, Prunus serotina, in bottom of small valley.
