Habitat: in bottom of hollow, ungrazed woods of Quercus alba, Fraxinus americana, Populus grandidentata, Carya ovata.
Plant Morphology Observations: Small tree 10 m. tall, 40 cm. in diameter. Stems smooth until 15 cm. in diameter, the bark +/- not flaking. Tree in full bloom, exclusively male (see no. 16709, a nearby female tree). Flowers lightly fragrant. Bud scales, tips of calyx and corolla lobes bright red at anthesis. Center of flower and disc shiny yellow.
